Neighbor to Know

Billy Schiel
Each week, we shine a spotlight on someone who's helping make Tomball the special place we all love. From hometown heroes to local business leaders, artists, and everyday changemakers — these are the faces and voices shaping our community, one story at a time.
This week’s spotlight is Billy Schiel. Billy is one of the founders of the well-known coffee shop called “Honor Society”. He is also the pastor at Church Project in Tomball.
What’s your favorite thing about living (or working) in Tomball?
“Tomball has a really profound sense of community. The culture of the city has been cultivated and passed down generationally and continues to be the "Hometown with a heart."
Can you share a memory or moment in Tomball that really shaped who you are today?
“I mean, it was growing up in the 80's going to Friday night football at old Cougar Stadium with my parents and siblings. The entire town would shut down and it was a sea of red rooting as one voice for those teams who were representing our community on the field week in and week out. Being a part of those moments shaped this idea of community and culture for me.”
What’s a local business or spot in Tomball you think everyone should know about?
“Che Gaucho on Mainstreet is a real sleeper to me. Their food is consistently tasty with a unique flavor profile. It's a great family run small business.”
If you had one weekend to show off Tomball to someone who’s never been, where would you take them?
“I'd start a great Saturday morning early at Honor Society Coffee for great espresso, obviously. Then, head over to the Farmer's Market. After that we'd head over to Matheson Park for a walk or some pickleball. I'd head over to Tejas Barbecue for a great lunch and some liquid refreshments. After lunch we'd hit up Dottie's Gelato shop for a sweet treat. Go get some shopping in at Burlap Ranch and Kirtley & Co. Grab dinner on the porch at Graze and then head over to Mainstreet Crossing for some live music to cap the day off.”
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
“After I graduated high school, I wanted to head to the California coast to live the beach lifestyle and pursue beach volleyball. In God's providence, he constrained me to Texas and Tomball. I've been blessed to develop many friendships with people who live along the California coast and my wife and I visit often throughout the year.”
What motivates you to keep doing what you do?
“I think having a conviction that pursuing the good of my city is actually the call that God has put on my life. It involves so many aspects of my life but it's an anointing that God has placed on me and my family and we continue to prayerfully give him our next yes.”
Is there someone in the community who’s inspired you personally?
“My friend Bruce Hillegeist with the Tomball Chamber is an inspiration. He has served our community selflessly for a long season of his adult life. His selfless service has helped contribute to the beautiful culture of our city.”
How do you stay grounded or find balance in your busy life?
“I'm convinced that when you're running in the lane(s) that God has uniquely wired and gifted you to run in, it's rewarding and energizing. I've learned to build weekly, monthly, and annual rhythms of rest and recreation. I plan out my year at the outset of each calendar year and this helps me stay refreshed and resilient to lead in all the spaces I'm blessed to lead in.”
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to make a difference in Tomball?
“Stay humble and hungry to learn from others who've been in this community for a long time. Pursue the good of the city and when the city is thriving you'll thrive also.”
Finish this sentence: ‘To me, Tomball is…’
“HOME! Tomball is a vibrant and beautiful community that has the feel of a small town with the vibe of an iconic community like Houston's Heights.”
